GREAT BRITAIN: AE medal, 1739, Adams & Chao-HAv-1-B, Betts-314, 37mm bronze Admiral Vernon for the "Havana campaign", Vernon standing on gun carraige with body left and head facing, with sword in right hand, and with three buildings and a ship at left with HAVANAI below and a ship at right, with ED VERNON ESQ VICE ADMIRAL OF THE BLUE around all // six ships right, one above two above three, with light waves below, in a semicircular harbor with large forts at the ends and a smaller one in the middle, town with spire in the middle, and WHO TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY around all, and "NOV 22 1739" in exergue, struck on cast blank, plain edge, NGC graded XF45, ex Heritage Auction 1201, Lot 10686. All three varieties of these Havana medals were made for a victory in a battle that never happened. Thinking that it was too strongly defended, Vernon bypassed Havana and sent Wentworth to Guantánamo Bay. With the nearest significant target being Santiago, 50 miles to the west, Wentworth decided to attack the city from the rear. However, his approach was well-scouted by the Spanish, who with the help of native allies, routed the attacking force.
