GREAT AMBROTYPE OF MOUNTED UNION CAV OFFICER. Very rare quarter-plate ruby ambrotype of an armed cavalryman brandishing his saber against the backdrop of an unidentified stone building. Rank cannot be determined (his age would suggest an officer), but this posed horseman wears a red tinted sash and holstered pistol on his belt. A brace of saddle holsters highlight the details of the horse furniture. The horse stands passively while a groom (another soldier?) is unobtrusive at the far right border. Condition is VG with several minor nicks in the plate. The ambrotype has been remounted in an earlier daguerreotype mat and retainer. Housed in a full composition case.
