GREAT AMBROTYPE OF BOSTON LIGHT ARTILLERYMAN. A pristine sixth-plate ruby ambrotype of a Boston Light Artillery enlisted man, circa 1860. An elite corps of Boston's militia the Boston Light Artillery was formed in 1853 and saw Civil War service as the 1st Massachusetts Light Artillery, later as the 11th Battery. This private wears the uniform prescribed in 1859 calling for a double-breasted gray frock coat with collar and cuffs trimmed in red and gold lace and shoulder scales. Trousers were also gray with a red stripe. The black felt shako bears the initials "BLA" in brass underneath the M1858 "Jeff Davis" eagle hat wreath. Most unusual is the M1833 Foot Artillery sword and scabbard in place of the M1840 Artillery saber usually associated with the BLA. A flawless example of ante-bellum photography housed in a full leather composition case. EXC.
