GRANT, ULYSSES S.
(1822 - 1885) Eighteenth President of the United States and Union lieutenant general. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., New York, [Jan. 25, 1884]. Grant takes leave to write his ex-aide from the Civil War, Adam Badeau. In part: ""àMrs. Theo. B. Musgrave of this city goes to H ___ this winter on a short visit. I take great pleasure in presenting her to you because I regard her husband as one of my best friendsàThis is the first note I have written since my injury a month ago last night. I am improving, though slowlyà"". On Christmas Eve, 1883 Grant slipped on an icy sidewalk in front of his home; the injury resulting from it necessitatd his use for a cane for the balance of his life. No doubt that this date was on Grant's mind as he started this letter, thereby placing the wrong date at top. Some toning, mounting remnants on verso, overall quite good.
