Comments: Goya's "Desastres" was produced in the period following the invasion of Spain by Napolean, a period of deep despair for both Goya and all of Europe. The "Desastres" was built around the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse:Conquest, War, Famine, Death. In the series, Goya repeatedly portrays man as a victim who can just as easily turn into the executioner when the chance comes. When asked why he painted these barbarious acts of war he is reported to have replied "To tell men forever that they should not bebarbarians." Because of their controversial nature, these prints were not published until 40 years after Goya's death and are considered to be Goya's most powerful statement of social criticism.
