GORMAN, WILLIS A.
(1816-1876) Union brigadier general who fought at Ball's Bluff, Seven Pines, and Sharpsburg. Later he commanded the District of Eastern Arkansas. Good content war-date A.L.S. "W. A. Gorman" adding rank, 1p. 4to., Helena, Ark., Jan. 27, 1863, in part: "…It being the object of the government to get out to market all the cotton possible in a legitimate way. I have permitted Mr. Ranger and Compton to report to you for a few hours protection to enable them to get out some cotton which they have purchased and partly paid for…Col. Compton was formerly colonel of the Burgess Rifles…he has been expressly permitted to go to the mouth of the Arkansas…". Very good.
