ESTC locates eight copies of this edition : L, C, O, Du / CaOHM, TxHR, DLC, CtY. An edition not found on-line in D or Dt. The last 4-pages contain two epilogues to ’She stoops to conquer’ : one by Goldsmith, the other by J. Craddock.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) LUCIAN, of Samosata. FIRST EDITION, partly in Greek and Latin, with engraved vignette title-page and one small text engraving, pages 31, 24-31, (1, blank), 295, (1, blank) ; (2), 71, (5 errata), small 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt spine : the binding heaviily worn but strong : a very good copy. Allatius (1586-1669), Vatican librarian, was trained as a physician. In 1645 he included the first methodical discussion of vampires, in De Graecorum hodie quorundam opinationibus ("On certain modern opinions among the Greeks"). In his later years he collected Greek and Syrian manuscripts to add to the late Pope Gregory XV's Eastern Library at the Vatican. (3) MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS, Emperor of Rome. The commentaries of the emperor Marcus Antoninus. Containing his maxims of science, and rules of life. Wrote for his own use, and address'd to himself. Translated from the original in Greek, by James Thomson, Gent. With a short preface by the translator, which may serve for an introduction to the author's sentiments, concerning the harmony and progress of universal nature, and the proper virtues of human nature. Printed by T. Parker, for the Translator : and sold by Charles Corbett … , 1747. FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, pages xii, 234, (2), (1, errata), (5, blank), 8vo, contemporary calf, gilt ruled unlettered spine : binding a little worn at corners but otherwise sound and very strong, light soiling of endleaves : a good to very good, sound copy. Little is known of the translator - he was not the autor of The Seasons. (4) [YOUNG ( Edward )]. Love of fame, the universal passion. In seven characteristical satires. The third edition. Printed for J. and R. Tonson, 1730. Pages (12), 175, (1, blank), 8vo, contemporary panelled calf : light marginal foxing in places, tear in one leaf without loss, and binding a little rubbed and worn but still strong and otherwise a very good copy.
