GOLDEN HORDE: Batu / Berke (1227-1267), silver dirham (1.10g), Bu Al-Ghar (Bolgar/Bulghar) mint, AH 649-657. Minted in the name of the Great Mongol Mongke. Obverse "manquqa al-a'zam" ("The Great Mongke"), reverse "darb bu al-ghar" ("mint of Bu Al-Ghar"). Mongke's tamgha on both sides separating legends in half. A-2018, Wilkes-2012 (VF estimated at $150). Better than average, choice extremely fine. Rare.

An interesting type citing the Great Mongol Mongke as overlord with no indication of which Juchid ruler it belongs to. The city Bu Al-Ghar is today Bolgar in Russia's Tatarstan Republic. Recent auction examples, which usually sell between $100 and $150, are in lower condition and/or have less eye appeal than this current piece.
