GOLDEN HORDE: Batu (1227-1256), silver dinar (1.41g), Bu Al-Ghar (Bulghar/Bolgar) mint, AH 624-654. Obverse citing Abbasid caliph "al-nasir li-din Allah amir al-mu'mineen" ("Al-Nasir Li-Din Allah, Commander of the Faithful"), reverse "Al-Dinar darb Bu Al-Ghar" ("The dinar, mint of Bu Al-Ghar"). A-N2018 (RR), Wilkes-2011 (VF estimated at $500). Minimal weakness compared to recorded specimens and an overall flashy example, choice extremely fine. Very rare.
A historically important piece minted under Batu, the founder of the Golden Horde, and thus marking a new appearance of coinage series under the Juchids. The city Bu Al-Ghar is today Bolgar in Russia's Tatarstan Republic. Examples of this type do very rarely appear in auction records, so to have four consecutive examples in this single auction is a very scarce opportunity by itself. Last example seems to have surfaced in Classical Numismatic Group's eAuction 409 (lot 832), a lower condition with far less eye appeal, sold for $299.
