Gisborne (1758-1846), Anglican priest, one of the Clapham Sect, fought for the abolition of the slave trade and was a close friend of William Wilberforce and Hannah More. His ethical writings were directed against Paley's expediency, and endeavoured to provide a basis of absolute right, but his criterion is mainly utilitarian.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) [HAYWOOD ( Francis )]. Haywood was the original translator of the work which long remained the standard English translation and which was commended by the chief authority on Kant in Great Britain, Sir William Hamilton. ESTC locates only four copies of this edition : L, O, SWNu / WaPS. Watts (1674-1748), gave a great deal of thought to the principles and methods of education ; his most important works on the subject for students and teachers are Logick: or the Right Use of Reason in the Enquiry after Truth (1725) and its sequel, The Improvement of the Mind (1741).
