This 1/6 plate ambrotype is an excellent specimen of a Rehn patent ambrotype. It is in an oval mat with "Ambrotype by Rehn" in the lower left, and the 1854 Patent in the lower right, by this Philadelphia practitioner. Behind the plate is a label with an extensive text describing this process of applying the varnish to a second plate of glass. The original case itself is intact with its original spine. The essential thing is that the ambrotype itself is appealing. Thus this is both a rare piece of photographic history and an appealing subject as well. [4-]
