The Deer is one of the most ancient Eastern Asian symbols of spirituality and protection. A pair sits atop the Potala Palace, but if you scan the literature, very few are found in artifact collections in museums abroad. Here is one likely used on a small personal altar or carried by a Lama for protection while traveling. Head and neck raised, ears and raised tail on alert, he is prepared to warn the faithful of any danger. The underside show painting inside with a pinkish color and would have been done in a consecration ceremony. From Tibet, likely not much earlier than the 19th C., he shows a bit of wear around his nose and some light contact hits at tail and rear, By whomever and however he was used or carried, he was protected from harm. 3" on the longest diagonal and with an 1-3/4" long base, he is one of the rarest items in this (or any) Asian sale.
