RIFLE. Cal. 36. NSN. Bbl. 31 7/8" oct. measuring 1" across flats. Muzzle is drilled for bullet starter. Right flat is marked "G. WOODWARD / KEENE / N. H". Gilman Woodward was making gun in the 1840's and was 1 of 4 gunsmiths in New Hampshire. In 1859 George O. Leonard, formerly of A. Leonard & Sons, rifle makers of Saxton's River, VT. took over the business. Combination globe front sight w/ combination lollipop tang sight. Unmarked lock. Single set trigger. Key fastened cheekpiece walnut stock w/ checkered wrist & pewter nose cap. German silver fittings consist of crescent buttplate, toe plate, circular lid patchbox, finger curl trigger guard, side plate escutcheons, key escutcheons & thimble. German silver ornamentation consist of 8 point stars on cheekpiece & toeline. Replacement hardwood ramrod held on iron under rib by 2 plain pipes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: photocopies of information regarding Gilman Woodward & Leonard rifles. CONDITION: overall fine. Stock has original finish retaining very good checkering & showing scattered scratches & handling marks w/ a lg. repaired chip above & forward of lock plate. Bbl. has smooth browned finish showing some very light pitting in breech & lock areas. Modern replacement nipple. Crisp mechanics. Bore is generally bright w/ strong rifling. (01-18669/DS).
