[GILBERT ( Sir Geoffrey )]. A treatise of tenures. Containing the original, nature, use and effect of feudal or common-law tenures. With a complete table to the whole. By a late learned judge. Dublin : Printed by Alex. M'Culloh, for Sarah Cotter, under Dick's Coffee-House, in Skinner-Row, 1754FIRST IRISH EDITION, pages vii, (1, blank), 144, (36), with leaf E1 duplicated without corresponding loss, 8vo, contemporary calf, old skillful rebacking retaining the original backstrip and original label, gilt : with light foxing but a very good copy. A scarce printing of a work, first published London 1730, which continued to be edited down to 1824 : ESTC locates a single copy in Ireland, D, and six in the US - none in L, O or C. Gilbert's published works are marked by precision and lucidity of style, and very considerable mastery of his subject, evincing a real desire to exhibit it in a logical shape. Their clarity gave them a considerable reputation. As a judge he was a fairly minor figure. His writings, however, cast light both on early 18C whig views of the law, and on the process of transition from the ‘abridgement style’ of much 17C legal writing to the modern legal treatise (ODNB).ENGLISH PRE 1801; DUBLIN PRINTED; LAW; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;
