<p>In 1950, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Heifetz Company sponsored a competition for portable table and floor lamp designs employing incandescent bulbs. The museum received over 3,000 entries. Marcel Breuer, Philip Johnson, and Richard Kelly were among the jurists who awarded California designer Gilbert Watrous the one special prize for the best floor lamp for the model offered here.
