<b>1399. GIACOMO MEYERBEER</b> (1791 - 1864) German opera composer and Director of the Royal Opera in Berlin, his works were in the ornate style of the great French composers of the time and were widely acclaimed. L.S. "<i>Meyerbeer</i>" 1p. 4to., Berlin, Apr. 13, 1862, in German to a friend, in part: "<i>...One year has gone by since you informed me of the sad fate of our mutual friend, Joseph Bacher, at which time I agreed to contribute to the expenses of his recovery, in the sum of two hundred thaler...Please permit me...to send you another sum of two hundred thaler for the year of 1862...</i>". Bacher was the son of a Viennese banker and an admirer of Meyerbeer who, according to Heinz and Gudrun Becker in their volume <i>Giacomo Meyerbeer: A Life in Letters</i>, represented the conductor in Vienna, acting more or less as his agent.
