GIACOMETTI, ALBERTO
313. ALBERTO GIACOMETTI (1901 - 1966) Swiss Surrealist painter and sculptor, known for is evocative slender statues. Exceedingly rare, fine content A.L.S. "Albert Giacometti" with original drawing of one of his statutes, 1p. 8vo., Paris, Jan. 27, 1952, in French to art dealer Pierre Matisse, son painter Henri Matisse. In part: "...The bronze that you imported last summer to the United States is a group of three figures which I made in Paris in 1925. In order to help you to identify the piece, I have drawn a little sketch of this group at the top [of this letter]...". At top left, Giacometti has executed a small drawing of the abstract sculpture. Pierre Matisse (1900-1989), was owner of the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, one of the most prominent showcases for modern art in the 1950s. Light offsetting from prior display, a few staple holes at top left, overall very good condition. Auction records indicate that only one Giacometti A.L.S. has been sold since 1988, and this is the first we've ever encountered which includes an original artwork. A better example would be hard to find! $4,000-6,000
