86. (GETTYSBURG COURT CASE AGAINST BLACK RESIDENT) An interesting Gettysburg related legal document 1p. folio, [Gettysburg, Pa.], Nov. 3, 1858 concerning the case of rape against black resident Worley Jones reading, in part: "Commonwealth vs. Worley Jones...warrant issued to Solomon E. Taylor constable of the Borough of Gettysburg on complaint of Mary Bolinger...[who] is now pregnant with a bastard child which is likely to become chargeable to said county and charging that one Worley Jones `col'd' did beget her with said child... and...defendant did have illicit connection with complainant by forcing and threatening to do her injury if she resisted...defendant brought up and the sum of eight hundred dollars bail required for his appearance at court to answer [the charges is] in default...". Interestingly, in 1862 Jones was again charged with rape and this time sentenced to one year in the state penitentiary and as a result lost his farm that was located south of the town along the Emmitsburg Road and the scene of the Second day's fighting. Minor soiling, else very good.$600-800
