GERMANY: Kaiserreich, medal (58.98g), 1915, Eimer-1941Ab, BHM-4117, Kienast-156, 55mm cast iron medal for the Sinking of the Lusitania after Karl Goetz, British copy, Lusitania sinking in heavy seas with KEINE BANN WARE above and DER GROSSDAMPFER / LVSITANIA / DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES / TAVCHBOOT VERSENKT / 5 MAY 1915 in exergue // line of passengers at ticket booth manned by Skeleton with CUNA(RD) / LINIE / CUNARD / FAHRKARTEN / AUSGABE around, GESCHAFT VBER ALLES at top, and K.G in exergue, small obverse rust spot, plain edge, Unc. The Lusitania was torpedoed off the coast of southern Ireland by U Boat "U-2" on May 7, 1915, with the loss of 1201 passengers and crew. Soon after, Karl Goetz produced a cast bronze medal for the event with the incorrect spelling "May" for the month. As seen with this example, the medal was copied by the British and used as propaganda against the Germans.
