GERMAN WORLD WAR II POLICE HELMET
GERMAN WORLD WAR II POLICE HELMET
German M1940 helmet, of the type issued to German personnel throughout the war. This particular model was issued to a police unit, and is identifiable as such by the decal on the left-hand side of the helmet, which depicts a gold eagle atop a swastika within a wreath, contained within a black shield with a gold border. The decal on the right-hand side depicts a swastika within a white circle, contained within a red shield. The very dark-green paint is still visible, although somewhat obscured by oxidation. The original liner, consisting of a leather cap with eight padded "fingers" attached to a metal band, is intact, and the leather itself is dry but supple. The leather chinstrap is missing, apart from a small fragment attached to the right-hand bale. The rear inside brim of the helmet bears the stamped number "7868", while "SE64" is stamped just below the left-hand bale. The inside dome of the helmet bears a paper label which probably displayed the owner's name, of which only the letter "F" is still visible. Surface rust throughout, else very good.
