GERMAN STAHLHELM FLAG
GERMAN STAHLHELM FLAG
Interwar German flag, 61" x 37", used by "Der Stahlhelm/Bund der Frontsoldaten" ("The Stahlhelm/Union of Frontline Soldiers"), a nationalist organization of World War I veterans. The flag resembles the Imperial war flag, with a Nordic cross in the center and an Iron Cross over a black-white-and-red banded field in the upper left canton. However, the imperial eagle in the center has been replaced by a profile image of a German helmet (the "Stahlhelm" from which the group derived its name). The organization operated as both a mutual aid society and a political combat group, and was the largest nationalist organization in Germany by 1926, with 500,000 members. It later joined the coalition that brought the NSDAP to power, and was thereafter absorbed into the SA. Minor moth nips throughout, rust stains from pushpins along the hoist, else very good.
