GERMAN PROPAGANDA POSTER

Propaganda Poster (33.25" x 46.75")
Very Fine- on Linen; Artwork by Ludwig Holwein
Stahlehm Bund der Frontsoldaten, 1929

Artist Ludwig Hohlwein employs a stark, shadowed depiction of a helmeted soldier alongside the evocative phrase "And you?" to create a haunting image urging Germans to support the Nazi party. Created in 1929, Hohlwein's powerful poster was utilized with varying texts by the Steel Helmet and the German National People's Party during the 1932 and 1933 elections. The artwork transforms the soldier and his helmet into an almost inhuman, sculptural form imposed upon a simplified imperial German flag backdrop. This poster was in excellent condition prior to linen-backing and required only a light touch-up in the lower left corner area, and it exhibits light crimping across the lower left side of the soldier's face and in the white background to the left of the film's title.

The Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten, a German paramilitary group established after World War I, consisted predominantly of veterans advocating for the restoration of the Imperial monarchy. Their recruitment message, akin to James Montgomery Flagg's iconic "I Want You" poster, was encapsulated in the slogan "Und Du?" which called upon Germany's defeated populace to oppose the Weimar Republic. Ludwig Holwein's compelling illustration for this campaign gained such notoriety that it was later repurposed for additional Stahlhelm materials, the German National People's Party, and even Nazi Party posters.
