GEORGES BRAQUE 1882-1963
Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882-1963 Paris
Title: Theogony of Hesiod / La Theogonie d'Hesiode, pl. 9, 1932
Technique: Original Hand Signed and Numbered Etching in colours on Van Gelder paper
Paper Size: 53.5 x 38 cm / 21.1 x 15 in
Plate Size: 36.7 x 30 cm / 14.4 x 11.8 in
Additional Information: This work is hand signed in brown crayon by the artist at the lower right margin "G.Braque",
and hand numbered in pencil at the lower left margin "22/50".
The work was printed in a limited edition of 50 hand signed and numbered impressions.
At the beginning of the thirties, Ambroise Vollard, the legendary Art dealer who has become more and more interested in printmaking, had suggested to Braque to illustrate a text for him.
Braque chose without hesitation the “Theogony of Hesiod”. One of the earliest Greek texts will become the inspiration for not only a milestone in Braque’s career, but to the entire twentieth century printmaking field.
Braque created a very large amount of preparatory drawings and studies emphasising his tremendous interest on this project.
In 1932, Braque completed 16 original etchings which were planned to be printed in a limited edition of 50 impressions to illustrated the text. The printing was due to be made by the master printer, Galanis in the Montmartre, Paris. However Galanis using Degas’s old press took extra care in printing and by 1939 at the time of Vollard accidental death the project was not completed. Only 10 etchings from the 16 were completely printed and they were signed by Braque in Brown crayon. The remaining six where either not printed or signed.
Only in 1954 Aime Maeght has decided to complete this project but in a book form. He used some of Vollard plates with some additional ones in etching highlighted by aquatint and mostly without the remarques at the edges of the plates.
Our impression is without a doubt from the original 1932 Galanis edition of 50.
Furthermore, our impression comes directly from the estate of Henri M. Petiet. The paper is stamped verso with the Henri M. Petiet collection stamp (the initials 'H.M.P.' in an oval) in black ink.
Henri M. Petiet (1894-1980) was an important Parisian collector, publisher and dealer in prints and drawings of such artists as Bonnard, Vuillard, Luce, Signac, Matisse, Rouault, Villon, Vlaminck, Dufy, Picasso, Laurencin as well as Braque. He has bought a considerable amount of Ambroise Vollard estate after his death in 1939.
