In the months following the close of his administration and his return to his beloved estate, Washington writes to attorney and planter “Ludwell Lee Esq” at “Shuters Hill”. In full “General Spotswood, Mrs., Miss & Capt Spots-wood, and Miss Thornton of Culpeper (all relations I believe of yours) are now here. —They, Mrs. Washington and myself, would be glad to see you, Mrs. Lee, Miss. Armistead & any others of your family, at Dinner tomorrow. With esteem & regard, I am Dear Sir...” Boldly penned and signed with integral leaf addressed in his holograph. Expected toning; light scattered soiling and staining; seal tear and other occasional very small marginal tears together with partial fold separations, all with negligible paper loss, are archivally repaired and silked for preservation. With all faults, a very attractive letter, boldly penned. Tipped at top edge to mount and tastefully matted beneath portrait paintings of the President and wife Martha, 7"x10" each. Overall approx 19½"x25½". Ready for framing.
