GEORGE WASHINGTON D.S.
151. GEORGE WASHINGTON His endorsement "Go: Washington" on the verso of a D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., Alexandria, Apr. 19, 1786, a bill from William Stevenson to the Potomac Company for four barrels of pork. On the verso someone has noted that the bill was paid on Apr. 20 and bears the approval signatures of Washington as well as JOHN FITZGERALD, a former aide-de-camp on Washington's wartime staff, and GEORGE GILPIN, who was one of the pallbearers at Washington's funeral. Note that the date of the bill is the 11th. anniversary of Lexington and Concord. The Potomac Company was established by Washington and other like-minded individuals in order to make the Potomac River suitable for navigation. Usual folds which are only slightly separated in a couple of places, none of which affect Washington's signature, otherwise very good.$4,000-6,000
