GEORGE WASHINGTON 3rd person autograph document, signed 3 times in the text, 1p, Jan 22, 1755, folio, an agreement to purchase tools from Adam Stephen. In part, "Sundry Smiths Tools sold [to] G Washington (viz) One Large pair Bellows, One Large Vice...One pr Tongs old Iron, Three broad Files...Receiv'd...Of George Washington Ten Pistoles for the above Tools, which I hereby oblige myself to deliver in good order to the sd G Washington or his Order; or else, to cancel the bargain upon failure, if there unto required...Adam Stephen." Document is signed twice in the body of the text, "George Washington" and "G Washington", both being clear and attractive. Signed again in the heading, but partially damaged by paper loss. Almost certainly signed at Mount Vernon, just after Washington's defeat at Great Meadows and his subsequent resignation from military service. Having returned to Mount Vernon, Washington apparently planned to make repairs and restoration to his one and a half story cottage. In 1757, he would launch the first of three major renovations to Mount Vernon, and in 1759 the home would gain another occupant with his marriage to Martha Custis. Paper loss at upper right corner, professionally repaired. Few small holes and minor paper thinness at certain spots, o/w VG. $10,000-15,000
