Patton learns “ruthless method of making war”
(1895-1945). Celebrated Lt. General of the Army, one of the finest tank commanders ever, who advanced to full general (1945) after he led the Third Army at Normandy and through France. Controversial throughout his career, his toughness on his enemies as well as his own troops earned him the name “Old Blood and Guts.” War-date TLS “G S Patton Jr.”, 1p, 4to, Oct 20, 1942. Patton writes to his old mentor General Charles P. Summerall, president of The Citadel in SC. Superb content. In part, “For reasons which you can understand, it has been necessary to defer the mailing of this letter. I trust that when you read it you will have heard good news of me. I think I have told you before that you were the first Regular Officer that I ever saw...the night you bivouaced outside of Lexington, in the fall of 1903, when my Mother and I walked out to look at the soldiers. From that time forward, through West Point, at Ft. Myer, and in France you were an inspiration to me, particularly in your hard and ruthless method of making war. I remember before the San Mihiel [during World War I] we were discussing taking the Harem salient, and you asked me how I was to get the five tanks detailed for the operation across the river after they had taken the salient. I told you that...they would all be destroyed in the operation. You then said ‘in view of that fact do you still want them to undertake it?’ I said, ‘yes, sir,’ and you said ‘that is the way war should be waged.’ It was a great inspiration to me...” On a more personal note, Patton continues “Beatrice and I are both deeply distressed to hear about Mrs. Summerall and trust she will recover. Again thanking you for all you have done for me throughout my military life...” Boldly signed. Patton has crossed out the word “respectfully” in his closing and penned “affectionately” above. Normal folds; old paper clip stain at top edge; o/w Fine example. During World War I, General Summerall was Commander of the First Division and later the Fifth Corps, both of which were in the forefront of the fighting in France. He later became Army Chief of Staff.
