Celebrated Lieut General of the Army, one of the finest tank commanders ever, who advanced to full general (1945) after he led the Third Army at Normandy and through France. Controversial throughout his career, his toughness on his enemies as well as his own troops earned him the name “Old Blood and Guts. <b>War-date</b> DS “<i>G S Patton Jr.</i>,” 2pp, 4to, Headquarters, Third Army, Nov 19, 1944. Designated “<i>Secret,</i>” a recommendation to award the third highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medal, to Colonel <b>Halley Maddox</b>, later promoted to general, G-3 Section of the Third Army. The document reviews Maddox’ previous decorations and details the service for which Patton feels he should be distinguished with the DSM. “<i>For exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility. The distinction with which colonel Maddox served as a G-3 staff Officer during the planing phases and subsequent campaigns of three major combat operations during the period 20 June 1942 to 14 September 1944 marks him as an outstanding staff officer.</i>..” Patton cites Maddox’ service in the US at the Desert Training Center of the First Armored Corps, in Africa, Sicily, the United Kingdom, and in France during which Maddox “<i>repeatedly demonstrated his keen grasp of each detail of complicated military operations, skillfully assisting in the compilation and integration of the plans for these commands in the campaigns of Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, and Northern France</i>...” Much more.
