Because he resisted General Butler’s demand for surrender of arms in possession of city authorities, Colonel Kane was arrested on suspicion of protecting contraband traffic in arms and head of an armed force hostile to the US. He was confined to Fort McHenry and went south after his release 14 months later. At the end of the war he became sheriff of Baltimore and was mayor at the time of his death.
