<b>444. GEORGE INNESS, SR. </b>(1825 - 1894) American artist of the Hudson River School, renowned for his superb and somewhat somber landscapes. Scarce fine content A.L.S. "<i>Geo. I feel today however as though my old force was coming back again. So I think I shall have something to show before the 10th...</i>" Light soiling, else very good. This was a critical period in Inness' career. Shortly thereafter, he became so despondent and artistically confused, he repainted aspects of his canvases over and over again. As he struggled to paint what he thought should be coming from within him, he rarely was satisfied, and critics across the country criticized him for redoing aspects of canvases until they were ugly.
