This, the second of George III's five attacks, is the best documented and most important, not only for the political issues it raised but also for the stimulus it gave to psychiatry.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) ELLIOT ( Gilbert ), Earl of Minto. A weighty speech supporting union, mainly on the ground that it afforded the only means of effectually controlling the mutual animosities of catholic and protestant. Pp 131,(1),8vo,recent wraps:very good copy with contemporary signature of Sam.Cooper This pamphlet, which argued for the retention of the established status of the church of Ireland, caused a sensation. It was written as a reaction to the provocative activities of the Rightboys, an agrarian movement in Munster and parts of south Leinster. The main demand of the Rightboys was a reduction in the level of tithes payable to the Church of Ireland clergy, in view of their additional financial obligations to the Roman Catholic clergy. The pamphlet ran to several editions, both in Dublin and London, and eventually developed into a paper war of over ninety publications between the defenders of the church establishment and their Roman Catholic and Presbyterian adversaries (ODNB).(3) IRELAND. Pitt"s oft reprinted speech in which he "held out the prospect that the union would lead to the recognition of the catholic claims, which could not safely be admitted otherwise, and that, after it was effected, emancipation would depend only on the conduct of the catholics and the temper of the times.
