GEORGE E. PICKETT: (1825 - 1875) Confederate major general who formed the brigades for the ill-fated charge on the final day at Gettysburg. Pickett never forgave Lee for the destruction of his command, and died a bitter man. Excellent, rare late war-date A.E.S., in full: "Head Qrs. Pickett's Div. Mar. 4, 1865 Resp'y forwarded appd. G. E. Pickett Maj. Gen. Comdg". Beside Pickett's endorsement appear an addition signed forwarding endorsement of fellow general EPPA HUNTON (1822-1908) who fought at Bull Run and South Mountain, was wounded during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, and finally captured at Sayler's Creek. The endorsements appear on the verso of a letter from Sgt. W. H. Nelson to Lee's aide Walter H. Taylor requesting that he be assigned to light duty due to a wound. Sold with two documents also relating to Nelson, Feb. 18 and 28, 1865, an enrolling officer's request that Nelson be appointed to light duty to arrest deserters and conscripts, and a surgeon's certification that Nelson is unfit for duty owing to a wound received at Cold Harbor. Pickett's signature is much bolder than usually seen, and all documents are overall very good. $2,000-3,000
