relic from a favorite horse
Worn remnants from the stable of the general’s favorite horse, Dandy, at his farm in Monroe, MI. The weathered wood and bent door hinge were part of the stable that housed the horse after Little Big Horn. Handsomely displayed under glass within wood shadow box frame. With letter of provenance. According to Libby Custer in her memoir Following the Guidon, the spirited five-year-old was obtained during the Wichita campaign during the winter of 1868-69. The somewhat small but sturdy bay had much stamina and with an indefatigable air, much as his master, got along famously with Custer’s ever-present stag hounds. However, setting out on his last campaign, Custer also took Vic, a Kentucky thoroughbred who was his battle horse. Vic, because of his speed and quickness became Custer’s choice for the fast charges and maneuverings of battle. It was Vic that carried his General into battle on Jun 25, 1876. Dandy remained behind with the extra mounts kept with the pack train. Libby states however, that Dandy was wounded during the battle on Reno hill. After the battle, Dandy was returned to Mrs. Custer at Monroe who entrusted him to the care of the general’s father. Emanuel Custer became quite attached to the old ‘trooper,’ and they appeared together in local parades and ceremonies until the horse’s death at age 26. He lies buried in an orchard on the farm.
