RARE CHANCE TO OWN SUCH AN OLD IRISH BLACKTHORN STICK

This is an absolutely marvelous find. A fine big scelp of a stick over 100 years old. It has a fine old bulbous handle with a gorgeous natural hue made from the root of the blackthorn tree (A sacred tree in Irish Mythology under which the Sidh of Fairys live) The engraving on the stamped Sterling Silver Band reads W.H.S 1786-1926. The band was placed on the stick to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the West Highland Society (I believe it was renamed in 1786 from the Society of The West Highlands to the West highland Society) The stick though was probably cut in Ireland in the latter half of the 19th Century then brought to Scotland and most likely belonged to a member of the Society who had the band applied in 1926. a lot of the 'Big Families' of the period would have owned estates in both countries. The stick is covered all over in a marvelous patina and has the sought after very prominent 'knobbles' all the way down the shaft. These sticks are also known as Shillelaghs or Batas and have been used throughout history as a weapon by the Irish.

Please see my inventory for more Irish and Catholic Interest items.
