GENERAL WALTER C. SHORT`S GOLD SWORD KNOT
986. GENERAL WALTER C. SHORT'S GOLD SWORD KNOT A fine Short relic, his gold sword knot most likely with him at Pearl Harbor, and, as the attack was on a Sunday, very likely worn by him as he watched his command being destroyed. The gold woven relic measures 15 1/2" overall with a braided cord and acorn-shaped knot at one end. The knot is accompanied by a copy of a typed D.S. by Short's son, Walter D. Short, March 12, 1988, reading in full: "This is to certify that I gave to Edward Whaling the following items that belonged to my father, LTG Walter C. Short: funeral flag, dog tag and two sterling silver general's stars". Whaling, a noted uniform collector from whom a group of Short relics originated, befriended Short's son and at their meeting also received this dress sword knot. Short maintained until his death that he deserved a fair court martial, and that his conscious was entirely clear. A fine relic, fine condition. $400-600
