GENERAL WALTER C. SHORT`S DOG TAG
(1880 - 1949) American general responsible for the air and ground defense of Pearl Harbor. After the Japanese attack, Short and Adm. Husband E. Kimmel were relieved of command and blamed for the debacle. However, an inquiry surmised that officials in both Washington and Hawaii were derelict. An important Short relic, his personal ""dog tag"" (or identification tag) undoubtedly worn by him as he watched his command being destroyed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor! The steel tag measures 2"" x 1 1/8"" and bears his embossed identification: ""WALTER C. SHORT 0-1621 T41 O [next of kin] ISABEL DEAN SHORT FORT SHAFTER T[erritory of]. H[awaii]. P"". Accompanied by a copy of a typed D.S. by Short's son, Walter D. Short, March 12, 1988, in full: ""This is to certify that I gave to Edward Whaling the following items that belonged to my father, LTG Walter C. Short: funeral flag, dog tag and two sterling silver general's stars"". Whaling, a noted uniform collector from whom a group of Short relics originated, befriended Short's son and was given this relic subsequently. Short maintained until his death that he deserved a fair court martial, and that his conscience was entirely clear. A fine relic.
