<B>GENERAL DANIEL E. SICKLES: LOT OF FOUR AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, 1864-1866.</B></I> Sickles (October 20, 1819 - May 3, 1914) was a colorful and controversial American politician, Union general in the American Civil War, and diplomat. This lot has four letters signed by General Sickles; two with <I>“D. Sickles”</B></I> bold signatures, and two with <I>“D. S.”</B></I> signature. All letters are mounted on cards, three are 6” x 8.75” and one 7.50” x 11.25”. <B>First letter:</B></I> New York Nov. 21 1864. <I>“Dear Mr. Smythe, I beg to command my friend Capt. McLeer, comptroller of Brooklyn, to your acquaintance and to solicit your favor in behalf of the application he will use in my name Very Sincerely, D. Sickles.”</B></I> <B>Second</B></I> <B>letter</B></I>: Headquarters, Department of the South Charleston, S. C. 26 Aug. 1866. <I>n part <I>“Private, My Dear Mr. Stanton, One of my friends in Washington writes as follows last week - Col. Morrow the presidents Secretary remarked at our house last evening that Secretary Stanton would soon leave the Cabinet”. </B></I> Etc. faithfully yours, D. Sickles. <B>Third letter:</B></I> Sunday (New York) <I>n part “Dear General if you have not received a similar letter from Col. Shepard, I hope you will answer the enquires he makes in the enclosed… feel like resting until my birthday - Oct 20th which I propose to celebrate for ten days and nights.. when a man celebrates his 76th birthday he is entitled to a good time & ten days & nights are little enough for the Event.” Etc. Yours D. S<B>. Fourth letter: </B></I>Friday 23 Fifth Avenue. (New York) in part <I>“Dear general - here I am at home again - arrived this morning and found your letters. Enclosed private cheque</B></I> <I>for M. & S. bill $27.00. I attended the funeral services at the “Wilson” residence - Roosevelt treated me with conspicuous attention - root also Spoke at the G. A. R. memorial service in the “Music temple” - the exhibits grand great audience - speech very well received”</B></I>. Etc. Yours truly D.
