Of swallow-tail form with white cotton shield, with 21 stars encircling a crossed cannon and fouled anchor, all painted red and sewn to a blue wool field; 1 1/2-in. binding with three sewn grommets; double-sided; some fading to wool, staining, moth nips and 2-in. separation at edges, 36 1/4 x 61 1/2 in.PROVENANCE:
Mohawk Arms, Inc., Bouckville, NY, Sale 46, lot K-104. The catalog states that this flag came from the old private collection of John H. Koster, Company H, 21st Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers. Koster was very active in the G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic), serving as an "aide-de-camp" to the Commander-in-Chief of the G. A. R. at one point. Other items relating to Koster were sold in the same sale as the present lot. Photocopies of Koster's G. A. R. appointment and related veteran's items accompany the lot, as does the Mohawk Arms Sale 46 catalog.
