GENE TUNNEY: (1898 - 1978) American boxer who defeated Jack Dempsey twice for the heavyweight championship. Fine content T.L.S. "Gene" on Derman Tire & Rubber Co. letterhead, 1p. 4to. New York, Aug. 17, 1950, to his longtime friend Robert Gros. In part: "...I have your telegram inquiring about the expression 'Sunday Punch' and regret to have to advise you that I have been unable to trace its origin. I have inquired several places, all to no avail. I definitely think it is a latter day expression, as it was not in use when I was a youngster...Of course, 'Sunday Punch' mans the hardest, neatest, cleanest and most effective...if I had heard it as a youngster, I would have been offended since I always thought of Sunday as the Sabbath, a day set aside for rest, meditation and prayer. I am sure that 'Sunday punch' was coined by some vulgarian who might have been an early Communist or wobbly...I have been elected by the State of New York American Legion Department as a delegate at large to the National American Legion Convention to be held in Los Angeles...". Boldly signed, a "Received" stamp at bottom, otherwise very good. $75-100
