GEN. ROBERT C. RICHARDSON, JR.'S DRESS UNIFORM AND TAIL COAT AS COMMANDANT OF CADETS AT WEST POINT
Fine pair of dress uniforms once belonging to Gen. Robert C. Richardson, Jr. while he served as Commandant of Cadets at West Point starting in 1929. Present is Richardson's heavy wool dress tunic and trousers, shoulder straps bearing two stars and denoting his rank as lieutenant colonel. Matching gold metal thread rank insignia are applied at the end of each sleeve. The tunic bears four straight-flap buttoned pockets and a four button front closure, and all of the original buttons are present. Richardson's matching wool dress trousers bearing two gold metallic thread stripes are also present. The tunic bears the original label from "The Cadet Store" at West Point. Also present is Richardson's dress mess jacket with tails, sleeve ends bearing appropriate lieutenant colonel's insignia in bullion and metallic thread, two rear and six front buttons all original to the garment. Maker's label within from "Rogers-Peet Company New York - Boston". Both uniforms are in spectacular condition, with no damage nor mothing evident. Richardson graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and in 1906 and again in 1914 he returned to teach English there. He was appointed Commandant of Cadets at the West Point and served from 1929 until he was replaced by Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. in 1933. Richardson also headed the Department of Tactics.
