GARRETT, PATRICK F.
(1850 - 1908) American frontier lawman who tracked down and killed Billy the Kid, he later organized the LS Pat Garrett Rangers to put down cattle rustling in the Texas Panhandle. Good content A.L.S. "P. F. Garrett" on Customs Service letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., El Paso, Mar. 1, 1902 to Hy. J. Bowles. Garrett apologizes for his failure to return his friend's letter, having been "…busy as an actress with twins". He adds: "…In speaking of actresses it makes me wonder if you are so good as you should be. In this I will say for myself that there are many good actresses in El Paso, but I have experienced a change of conduct as well as of life [underlined]. I hope you are not bothered by such a sad affliction…as to the ranch business you write me about, I can't call to mind a place right now that would suit you, but will try and look up something. Write and let me know about what size ranch you would want…a location in New Mexico…would be better than Old Mexico…". 1902 was a transitional year in Garret's life: four years earlier he had lost his job as Sheriff of Dona Ana County following a shoot-out, and had found a new job as customs inspector through the intervention of his friend, President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1905 he took up ranching which resulted in the dispute which ended his life. Spindle holes with no paper loss in black areas, fine condition.
