GARNETT, ROBERT S.
(1819 - 1861) Confederate brigadier general who became the first general from either side to be killed in the Civil War, at Carrick's Ford. Rare good content A.L.S. ""R. S. Garnett, Lt. Art."" 2pp. 4to. with integral transmittal cover, Troy, Aug. 11, 1845, to Major Monroe, in full: ""We have this moment received the letter of the Adj't. Gen'l. of the 7th inst., addressed to Col. Walbach, in which he is instructed 'to select a company of his command with a full complement of officers and men (to be filled by transfer if necessary) and a field battery'à'to hold itself in readiness to embark at a moments notice for the bay of Aranzas, Texas'. Should your company be selected, it is my earnest desire (and determination if possible) to accompany it. I beg therefore that no officer may be transferred into my place in the company, and that you will inform me of the Colonel's actions in the case as soon as it takes place. I shall write immediately to Capt. Freeman, and request him to fore warn me of the movement, if they determine there to dispatch the company on this duty, in order that I may delay it for a moment. If your company should not be selected, but one of which the 2nd lieutenant is absent, will you be good enough to express to the captain of it, my willingness and desire to transfer into his company and fill the vacancy? That is provided the 2nd lt. of it remains absent and he (the Capt.) does not prefer someone else. I would regret much to leave 'old Co. G.' but you will doubtless agree that the occasion justifies my conduct. I can reach you in two days after the receipt of Freedman's notice"". Interestingly, Garnett's wish must have been granted, as he served throughout the Mexican war winning promotion for gallant conduct at both Monterey and Buena Vista. Very good.
