(1819 - 1861) Confederate brigadier general who became the very first Southern officer and the first general from either side to be killed in the Civil war, at Carrick's Ford. Excessively rare A.L.S. 1p. 4to., [West Point], Aug. 3, 1854, to Cadet Lt. H. L. Abbot, Officer of the Day at West Point, in part: "...In addition to the instructions given by me this morning to the Officers of the Day to be transmitted to the succeeding officers…instruct the members of the sections paraded for examination to add the state from which they are appointed to their names… when they are called from the floor…".
