GARFIELD, JAMES A.
(1831 - 1881) Twentieth President of the United States, Union army major general, assassinated while in office. Very rare partial partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. oblong folio, Washington, May 19, 1881, the bottom portion of a letters patent, boldly signed by Garfield with a large 5"" signature just six weeks before his assassination. Co-signed by JAMES G. BLAINE as Secretary of State. Garfield was shot by assassin Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881 and lingered until September 19th, holding office as President for just over four months. Bearing the original paper seal, folds and a bit of soiling, otherwise very good.
