GADSDEN, JAMES
(1788 - 1858) American army officer and diplomat who negotiated the Gadsden Purchase acquiring New Mexico and Arizona for the United States. A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Mobile Point, Apr. 18, 1820, to Col. S. Hawkens, in part: ""...I have received communications from Col. Hawkens...offering to substitute Tapea, for all of the heavy walls of masonry constituting the Fort he has to erect...he has investigated the subject & examined all the shell banks...has found them difficult to access...I am inclined to believe that he can construct walls of Tapea much cheaper here than there of brick...I give a decided preference myself to Tapea for all walls for Forts..."". Folds, otherwise boldly written, very good.
