(1824-1906) Confederate brigade general who commanded troops in the Shenandoah Valley, principally at New Market and Waynesboro.War-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., "Narrows", Dec. 31, 1862, Lt. Col. J. Lyle Clarke, Commander of the 30th Battalion of Sharpshooters. In part: "...Some one in the employ of your Quarter Master...had a barrel of apple brandy, from which he was selling to citizens & soldiers...contrary to the law of the state as well as the army regulations. I directed you to investigate the matter...It is not just that a private should be punished for bringing a canteen of whiskey into camp for sale & an officer should be allowed to bring in a barrel...and go unpunished...If you desire a detail to be made for the purpose of going in search of deserters...send the proper application...". Slight show-through of writing on verso, even toning, else very good.
