This is one of the notable mines of White County. The county was organized in 1857 from part of Habersham County, which in turn was established in 1818 from Indian treaty lands. White County formed a boundary between the Cherokee and Creek Indian nations. In the late 1820s gold was discovered along the Nacoochee River (also known then as Duke's Creek), and that initiated the Great gold Rush of that area.
