150. [GA & AL CAVALRY REGIMENTS]

recommends charles crews for promotion to brig general
Confederate Army Inspector’s Report on the condition of Georgia and Alabama Cavalry regiments. AMsS, 4pp, large 4to, n.p., Nov 1864. Boldly penned by Major Henry Bryan, AS General, to Col. Geo. M. Brent, AAG at “Hd Qrs. Divn of the West,” Beauregard’s acting chief of staff. Significant content. On blue stationery, Bryan makes his situational report as the Confederate cavalry was facing Sherman’s “march to the sea” and was fighting with General Hood towards his disastrous defeat at Nashville in December. The first two pages are a continuation of the reports on the 3rd, 51st, 7th and 12th AL, listing the names of all missing officers unavailable for duty, having lost limbs and recommended for retirement from active service, as well as those who have deserted or been taken prisoner. A sampling: “12th Ala, Co. E; Lt. John Ryan—deserted the regt in August, went to Morgan Co. & was raising a regt by order of a Major White & has since gone to Col. Patterson of Roddy’s command. Col. Reese has evidence that Lt. Ryan has enlisted deserters from his regt. into Roddy’s command.” There is also a report on the discipline, condition and number of arms in various regiments. The last two pages, headed “Crews’ Ga Brigade,” describe this unit composed of the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th GA Regiments. In part, “Commander is properly Br. Gen. Alfred Iverson, who was assigned by the War Dept., I think, last Spring. He has been an infantry officer most of the war & by the general report is inert & of very moderate capacity; and not at all likely to have much influence over the brigade. Many of the men were at Atlanta with his mixed command there. Col. C.C. Crews of 2d Ga., has commanded the brigade most of the time in the last two years & has its full confidence. He is a plain man of quiet manner, sensible & seems resolute. He stands high for gallantry & integrity, and is said to have shown good judgment. To him & not to Gen. Iverson, is the credit due for the capture of Stoneman & part of his raiders. If promoted to Brig. Genl. he would...exercise more authority & be better able to improve his brigade. He seemed to have only a detailed Adjt. Genl & a few couriers for ‘staff’ the night I staid with him...Clinch’s 4th Ga. is from the coast & pine barren country south of the Altahama River. The other 5 regiments are from Northern & north Western Georgia. The majority of the men of all 6 regts. are of small means or poor. Some raised in the mountains were, like the Ala. Mountaineers, very ignorant and deserted not a few going to the enemy. The portion 93d & 6th of the old regiments which I saw, seemed brave & hardy men, calculated to do good service, tho’ wanting in military bearing...the general discipline is fair as compared with other cavalry...a good deal of spirit of equality between officers & men the brigade was effectively mounted for marches, but not for charges, there being too many mules...” Much more excellent content. Right edge nicks with negligible paper loss; else Fine. Brigadier General Charles Crews’ promotion herein recommended came too late in the war to be confirmed.
