Günther Uecker gained great reputation with his white painted, relief-like nail pictures and is now one of the most important contemporary German artists; his prints fetch up to 8,500 euro at international auctions

A dense arrangement of strongly embossed nail heads fills the rectangular image area. They create an exciting play of light and shadow, which set the composition in in motion in the eye of the beholder. The hand-made rag paper and the strong embossing, which bring about corrugation in the margins, give the work also a three dimensional character. Therefore, above all, the very clear embossed prints by the artist are especially in demand.

The embossing is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Uecker 91’, and dedicated lower left in pencil ‘für Josef Kovacs’. The margins of the sheet are minor unfresh and show occasional unobtrusive creases. The condition is good. The image measures 58 x 47.7 cm, the sheet 98.8 x 78 cm.



Günther Uecker (born 1930)

Günther Uecker studied painting in Wismar and Berlin-Weißensee from 1949 to 1953. He left the GDR and moved to West Germany to continue his studies at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. Already in 1956/57, he created his first relief-like ‘nail paintings’, for which he is internationally known today. Some of his art can be classified as kinetic art. He represented Germany in 1970 and 1972 at the Biennale in Venice and took more than once part in the documenta. He was a professor at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1974 to 1995, and has won numeral awards. Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
