Günther Uecker gained great reputation with his white painted, relief-like nail pictures and is now one of the most important contemporary German artists; his prints fetch up to 8,500 euro at international auctions

This lithograph is a two-dimensional and colored version of the famous three-dimensional, white nail reliefs that established the reputation of the artist. A rectangular area with a wood-like structure in brown and black is covered with an unstructured network of nail shapes that are also printed mot in white, but in black.

The lithograph in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Uecker 80’. The sheet bears a soft crease in the lower left corner. The condition overall is very good. The image measures 76.4 x 59.3 cm, the sheet 84.2 x 59.6 cm.



Günther Uecker (born 1930)

Günther Uecker studied painting in Wismar and Berlin-Weißensee from 1949 to 1953. He left the GDR and moved to West Germany to continue his studies at the art academy in Düsseldorf under Otto Pankok. Already in 1956/57, he created his first relief-like ‘nail paintings’, for which he is internationally known today. Some of his art can be classified as kinetic art. He represented Germany in 1970 and 1972 at the Biennale in Venice and took more than once part in the documenta. He was a professor at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1974 to 1995, and has won numeral awards. Günther Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf. (fea)
